Exceptional Driver Services provides medical and adaptive driving evaluations in Cary for drivers with medical, cognitive, physical, neurological, sensory, or confidence-related driving concerns.

  • Medical Evaluation

Medical and Adaptive Driving Evaluations are designed for drivers who may have medical, physical, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or confidence-related concerns that could affect driving performance and overall safety behind the wheel. These evaluations provide a supportive and individualized opportunity for our instructors to better understand the driver's current abilities, challenges, comfort level, and long-term driving goals.

During the evaluation session, we observe real-world driving behaviors while also discussing important factors such as reaction time, decision-making, visual scanning, physical mobility, anxiety, endurance, vehicle access, and overall driving confidence. Depending on the driver's needs, the session may also include discussion of adaptive driving equipment, vehicle modifications, positioning, or strategies that may improve comfort, independence, and safety.

This evaluation is designed to create a clearer understanding of the safest and most effective path forward for the driver. Some drivers may benefit from continued behind-the-wheel instruction, adaptive equipment training, refresher driving lessons, or additional support strategies. Others may simply need reassurance, updated techniques, or confidence-building after illness, injury, medical events, or extended time away from driving.

Our approach is patient, respectful, and individualized. We understand that every driver's situation is different, and our goal is to help each person maintain as much safe independence and mobility as possible while prioritizing safety for both the driver and the community.

Benefits of the evaluation session may include:

    • Individualized feedback based on real-world driving performance
    • Identification of strengths, safety concerns, and support needs
    • Guidance related to adaptive driving equipment or vehicle setup
    • Confidence-building support for nervous or returning drivers
    • Recommendations for continued training or skill development
    • Supportive communication with family members or caregivers when appropriate
    • A clearer understanding of driving readiness and long-term safety goals

This important first step helps create a personalized plan that supports safer, more confident, and more independent driving experiences moving forward.
